Coraline

Coraline is a delightfully creepy animated film à la The Nightmare Before Christmas featuring a young girl who stumbles upon an alternate mirrored universe and risks becoming trapped “on the other side” forever.

Based on the beloved bestselling children’s classic by Neil Gaiman, Coraline is a fairy-tale nightmare steeped in classic storytelling, craftsmanship, and the old-fashioned art of moviemaking magic. In Coraline, a young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life — a better version. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her “Other” parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home.

Check out the book from the library, and then go see the movie in the theater.

President Obama on Libraries

“At the moment that we persuade a child, any child, to cross that threshold, that magic threshold into a library, we change their lives forever, for the better. It’s an enormous force for good.” — Barack Obama

President Barack Obama keynoted the opening general session at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, June 23–29, 2005, while a U.S. senator from Illinois.  To view his speech, go to http://www.ala.org/ala/alonline/resources/selectedarticles/obama05.cfm

Newbery Award Announced!

The winner of the 2009 Newbery Award for children’s literature was announced today.
The winjner is “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman.

We have the book in the Redwood Library, and I read it last month.  It’s a fantasy ghost story that I highly recommend.

You can view a trailer for the book at amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/Graveyard-Book-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0060530928/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233016846&sr=8-1

Here’s a description of the book:

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy.

He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.

There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy-an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer.

But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family. . . .

Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic “Coraline”. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, the graveyard book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

Celebrate Banned Books Week Sept 27 - October 4

I made this poster as part of my Library Technology class that I am currently taking at CSULB.  I choose to make my poster about Banned Books Week because it celebrates the freedom to choose.  It stresses the importance of our First Amendment right.  It draws attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.
